Hampton by Hilton Glasgow Central Hotel Review

I stayed 4 nights at the Hampton by Hilton Glasgow Central hotel in Glasgow, Scotland in May 2022. I picked this location specifically because it was within easy walking distance from the Glasgow train station, the hop on hop off bus starting location, and basically everything else I wanted to do in Glasgow. Plus, I was able to use points from my Hilton credit card to book so I saved quite a bit of money!

This is a review of my stay at the Hampton by Hilton Glasgow Central hotel, plus information about my room, the hotel itself, and other things related to my stay.

Note: I paid for the room myself (albeit with points) and have not received compensation from the hotel for writing this review. It’s my own thoughts and experiences and I’ve not been influenced in any way!

Getting to the Hotel

It’s really easy to get to the Hilton, especially if you’re coming in by train. It’s centrally located so you can get to it from all the major train stations within 15 minutes or so– though you DO have to go up/down some rather steep hills.

I came into Glasgow from Edinburgh and arrive at the Queen Street Station, so it only took me about 15 minutes or so to drag my suitcase up the hill to the hotel.

Distances from major transit points:

  • From Glasgow Central: 12 minutes walking (about 0.5 miles)
  • From Glasgow Queen Street Station: 15 minutes walking (about 0.6 miles)
  • From Charing Cross Station: 10 minutes walking (about 0.4 miles)
  • From Glasgow Airport (GLA): 22 minutes by bus/walking combo, or a 17 minute drive

Please note there is NO hotel shuttle from the airport.

👉Coming via airport? Book a bus ticket here to the city center, or get a private transfer booked ahead of time and have a driver meet you.

Check-in & Hotel Staff

Hilton does this thing where you can check in electronically, but I find it helpful to still go to the desk and make sure everything is sorted properly before heading up to the room. This turned out to be a good thing because I couldn’t get the mobile key to work anyway!

Luckily when I arrived there weren’t any long lines of people trying to get in, just a very efficient front desk staff who gave me my keys and directions to the elevator.

Every time I came in or out of the hotel, the staff recognized me and said hello (or goodbye). Overall I thought the staff were very friendly and professional.

My Room

I booked a queen room which comes with one “queen” sized bed (aka slightly larger than a single size), a coffee/tea bar, a TV, an ensuite bathroom, a small desk, armchair and basic room stuff like a closet and hangers and so on. There was NO microwave or fridge like you might find in American Hiltons, just fyi.

Bed

Bed, armchair and small desk with desk chair

Very comfortable bed! Maybe a little firm, but nothing like what I’ve run into in Southeast Asia. The pillows (four total) were very fluffy, but if they didn’t work out then I could’ve requested different ones with either softer or harder fillings.

View from near the window. There’s the TV and coffee station to the left.
Hot water kettle, mugs, instant coffee (decaf and caf) plus tea, sugar, creamer.
Decent closet with hangers, ironing board and iron, plus luggage rack.

Bathroom

Fairly small bathroom which was fine, but the toilet was really weird and slightly broken. One of the only things I didn’t like about the room.

Shower amenities like soap/shampoo/etc. were in those pump containers that’s bolted to the wall. These are hit or miss with me; I prefer individual bottles because it’s less likely someone’s tampered with them, but the wall soaps let you use more product if needed.

View

As typically happens with my rooms (for whatever reason), my view was of an alleyway and the building next door. Not very glamorous!

Room Tour Video

If you prefer, I have a room tour video I made the day I checked in:

Hotel Breakfast

One of the nicest things about this hotel is the breakfast! It’s a buffet style with a mix of English and Scottish foods like sausage, hash browns, baked beans, scrambled eggs, and even haggis! The chef was visible in the kitchen and I saw him working hard. The actual food was fine– better than some hotel breakfasts, but not as good as if you’d gone to a proper restaurant.

Breakfast hours were 7:00 am – 10:00 am and it was always packed, though luckily there were lots of little tables to guests to sit at. I think you could probably also take it up to your room if you wanted.

Waffle station and coffee/tea machines
Salad bar area with fruit and bread. They had gluten-free bread options upon request as well!

The buffet area also had a really cool coffee machine that could make different types of coffees (cappuccino, mocha, white coffee, etc.). It’s a Carimali coffee machine which is fairly high end, and they used Piacetto coffee in it which tasted SUPER good. It’s actual beans that are ground right before it makes the coffee.

I got this little video clip of the machine working:

The Lobby and Shared Spaces

Business center with computers and printer

There’s not much public space, though the lobby did have some chairs in a small sitting area and there was the “dining area” where breakfast took place. Other space include: business center (pictured) and a fitness center.

Misc. Observations

Because my room faced out into an alley it was actually fairly quiet, though occasionally I did hear conversations between people who were out there smoking. The neighborhood itself felt safe enough (though I didn’t go out at night) and there were several restaurants and bars nearby for dinner or whatever.

Final Thoughts

Overall, my stay at the Hampton by Hilton Glasgow Central Hotel was very comfortable! I liked the breakfast, the comfortable bed and the location (except for having to climb a hill each time).
