Da Nang Grocery Store Food Prices 2024

I recently stayed in Da Nang, Vietnam for three months and mostly did my own cooking. That meant going to the grocery store a few times a week, so of course I started keeping note of what things cost. Here’s a collection of prices of different foods I bought (or thought would be useful to show) from a mix of stores: Winmart+, Lotte Mart and JolyMart.

While local food and street markets meals are very affordable in Vietnam, I prefer to make my own food so I can indulge in familiar flavors from home (mostly potatoes and cheese). Also, I personally find it helpful to have real prices to plan my travel budget with, so I figured I’d share what I spent on my own groceries.

For one person: I spent roughly $180 USD/month on groceries in Da Nang. I had about half of this stuff delivered, so I might’ve paid a bit more than in-store prices but not MUCH more.

Okay, onto the food prices!

Staple Foods

Refrigerated milk and drinking yogurt

Eggs (10 in a pack): 40,900₫ / $1.64 USD

Milk (1L): 32,900₫ / $1.32 USD

Butter, unsalted (200g): 64,700₫ / $2.59 USD

Bread, banh mi style (1): 5,000₫ / $0.20 USD

Coffee, local grounds (200g): 120,000₫ / $4.80 USD (make it with a coffee cup filter!)

Salt (500g): 7,500₫ / $0.30 USD

Oatmeal, imported from USA (1lb): 115,000₫ / $4.60 USD

Pasta (400g): 29,100₫ / $1.16 USD

Pasta sauce (370g jar): 60,900₫ / $2.44 USD

Meat

Chicken, beef, and various hot pot mixes above

Ground beef, local (500g): 107,500₫ / $4.30 USD

Chicken breast, local (520g): 49,920₫ / $2 USD

Tuna, canned (150g): 46,200₫ / $1.85 USD

Off-brand SPAM (200g): 66,000₫ / $2.64 USD

Pate, canned (150g): 34,000₫ / $1.36 USD

I did find imported Australian and New Zealand beef (and imported American chicken), but it’s usually in a chuck roast or other cut and I really only use ground beef so I just stuck with the local cows. They do have a wide variety of canned meats here, including regular canned beef which looks interesting!

Vegetables & Fruit

Fancy grapes and some imported apples

Potatoes (1.6kg): 57,440₫ / $2.30 USD

Cabbage (400g): 15,940₫ / $0.64 USD

Corn, 2 ears: 31,500₫ / $1.26 USD

Apples, pack of 6: 37,000₫ / $1.48 USD

Bananas, 4-5 in a bunch: 16,939₫ / $0.68 USD

One thing I noticed in Vietnam is the orange juice is more like orange concentrate, but closer to a Sunny D kinda thing than actual orange juice. If you want actual orange juice you’d have an easier time getting it at a restaurant, I think.

Dairy & Related

Imported butter selection at Joly Mart. It’s slightly cheaper at Lotte Mart, I think.

Butter, imported from New Zealand (200g): 119,900₫ / $4.80 USD

Butter, imported from France (250g): 151,200₫ / $6.05 USD

Butter, imported from Ireland (200g): 94,000₫ / $3.76 USD

Cheese, “hamburger slices” (200g): 64,900₫ / $2.60 USD (it’s basically American cheese, I think?)

Oatside oat milk (1000ml): 49,900₫ / $2 USD

Yakult (5 pack): 23,900₫ / $0.96 USD

Yogurt (400g): 30,000₫ / $1.20 USD

The cheese selection is really dire here, unfortunately. I saw a lot of Laughing Cow and the hamburger sliced American cheese, but I could only find shredded cheese at the import store. They DO use cheese on sandwiches and stuff, but I think it’s a cheese spread rather than actual cheese, most of the time.

Plus side: there’s a TON of milk alternatives available! I saw almond, oat, walnut, soy…

Other

Peanut butter (340g): 68,000₫ / $2.72 USD

Nutella (350g): 129,500₫ / $5.18 USD

Beans in tomato sauce (230g): 18,900₫ / $0.76 USD

Yellow mustard (227g): 59,900₫ / $2.40 USD

Toilet paper (12 rolls): 52,500₫ / $2.10 USD

Alcohol & Soda

Coke (390ml bottle): 7,100₫ / $0.28 USD

Beer, Bia Saigon Lager (330ml can): 11,200₫ / $0.45 USD

Beer, Huda (330ml can): 12,400₫ / $0.50 USD (this is local to Central Vietnam)

Beer, 333 (330ml can): 11,700₫ / $0.47 USD

Beer, Larue Special (330ml can): 11,300₫ / $0.45 USD

I don’t drink much alcohol but I get a lot of questions about how much beer costs in each country, so here y’all go! I stuck to local brands, but they also have imports from Thailand, Japan, Europe and the US.

Vietnam Grocery Store Tips

You can find cheaper fruit and veg (and more variety) at smaller stores/market stalls, for a better overall price.

If you want fresh bahn mi bread, you have to go out in the morning and get it from a stall or an actual bakery. It’ll be cheaper and better than the stuff you get at the grocery store.

Winmart+ often has sales of buy 2, get 1 free. Sometimes they also have promotions where if you buy a certain amount, you get a free item. All the info is in Vietnamese, so be sure to translate the signs with Papago or Google Translate!

They have lots of things imported from Korea, Thailand, Australia and even the US. You do pay a bit more than local brands, but if you’re really craving something specific then it’s worth going to Jolymart and picking up a bag of Bob’s Red Mill Oatmeal (for example).
