Kuala Lumpur Grocery Store Food Prices 2024

I recently stayed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for two months and mostly did my own cooking. Here’s a collection of prices of different foods I bought (or thought would be useful to show) from Jaya Grocer, a local supermarket that has a good blend of local produce and imported stuff.

While local food, street markets, and non-Western meals aren’t terribly expensive in Malaysia, if you crave non-Malaysian food it’s cheaper to make your own meals rather than buy from a restaurant. For instance, I crave potatoes like a mad thing, so it’s easier for me to just make my own hash browns or whatever.

Also, I personally find it helpful to have real prices to plan my travel budget with, so I figured I’d share what I spent on my own groceries.

For one person: I spent roughly $240 USD/month on groceries in Kuala Lumpur. That’s comparable to what I was spending on groceries in Japan, to give you a price point.

Here’s a typical grocery trip’s shopping:

Jaya Grocer is on Grab’s mart delivery service, so I got terribly spoiled having my shopping delivered directly to my apartment complex. The downside of that is obviously they don’t have EVERYTHING listed online, so I’m sure I missed out on some items I would’ve liked to buy. Oh well!

The other exciting thing about Malaysian grocery stores is they have tons of dairy products! All kinds of shredded cheese, cream cheese, different yogurts– I indulged quite a bit.

Malaysia Grocery Store Tips

You can find cheaper fruit and veg at smaller stores/market stalls, for a better overall price. Fruit is seasonal, so you might not be able to find certain things all year-round but you WILL be able to find really good fruit for a good price all the time.

Generally, the bulk foods cost less than pre-packaged ones. You need to go get your bulk items weighed at the counter before going to the check out. Usually there’s a staff member available to weigh things for you.
