How to Never Forget Anything at Your Hotel Again

Whether you’re a new traveler or just someone with a tendency to second-guess whether you packed that one tiny-but-crucial item, there’s a way to keep it all under control.

Everything else? It gets put away into my suitcase the evening before.
The goal is to make it easier on my tomorrow-self, so I have everything ready to go and only need to worry abut a few items instead of my entire packing list. It’s much less hassle to worry about a handful of items, especially when I’m already stressed about trying to get to the airport or whatever.
If you can believe it, I used to only pack the DAY OF my travel! I mean yeah, it only took about 30 minutes or so, but they were a very stressful 30 minutes. Don’t do that, and instead pack the night before.
Also, if you’re new to travel, I recommend using a packing checklist. Print out a copy of everything you have, put it in a little protective envelope and use it to make sure you didn’t leave something behind.
Oh, and if you put something in the hotel safe (like your passport), this is the time to grab it.

Special note for hostel guests: You should definitely pack the night before! Especially if you have to leave early, before 8am! It’s just good manners.
Double-Check and Document Your Space
Here’s the thing: no matter how well you think you’ve packed, there’s always the possibility that something gets left behind. That’s why I never skip my “two walk throughs” rule before leaving an Airbnb, hostel, or hotel.
The first walk through is for basic peace of mind. I poke through drawers, check countertops, and look under the bed (because yes, socks have a way of vanishing down there).
I open cabinets, check bathroom shelves, and even peek inside the fridge and kitchen cabinets. This step alone has saved me from forgetting everything from phone chargers to an unopened pudding (yes, that happened once).
The second walk through is where the important stuff happens: I take a short video of the entire space.
You might roll your eyes and think that’s overkill, but trust me, this can save you a massive headache later.
